Community Involvement

Parental involvement

We welcome parents’ active involvement in their child’s education and endeavour to maintain a close partnership between home and school. We make every effort to keep parents informed and up-to-date about both school developments and wider educational changes. Parents are kept informed about what their child is studying via a half-termly curriculum information sheet. We consult as widely as possible on a variety of issues and welcome dialogue.

We encourage parents who are able to help in the classroom during school hours. We hope this will be as rewarding an activity for the parent as it is for the children who will benefit from having another adult working with them under the direction of the class teacher.

During the course of the school year there are opportunities for parents to come in and view their child’s work and share in activities such as celebration

Assemblies, ‘Share and Celebrate’ sessions, social events, a variety of school performances and general school activities.

Parents who have enquiries or seek appointments are seen as promptly as possible. It is normal practice for us to ‘follow up’ on issues or concerns.

 The Friends of Ashlands Association

The school has an active Friends Association. Friends of Ashlands encourage and foster good relations within the school community and ensure a friendly welcome to new members. In addition, Friends organise fund raising and social events that enhance the image of the school and help foster links with the local community. Fund-raising is targeted at projects that will enhance the school environment such as playground and library improvements and objectives are agreed with the Governors and the Headteacher at the beginning of the academic year.

The Friends Committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting in October of each year. Parents and Friends of the school are very welcome to help at, or arrange events, whether or not they are committee members. Friends hold a number of events throughout the year, such as the Christmas and Summer Fairs, Discos, Bun Bakes and our popular Bonfire night. Friends also organize the school’s entry in the Ilkley Carnival parade. They also run a second hand uniform shop.

The Friends committee can be contacted either via the school office or the school’s internal mail system.
