Year 2 Autumn 1:

In Science the children have been learning about ways to stay healthy. In one lesson they learnt about the importance of using soap to stop germs spreading by doing an experiment with pepper and soap.

In Geography we have been sorting human and physical features then learning how to use map symbols to create sketch maps to show some of these features. We had a hunt for symbols, then used OS maps to help us create our own sketch maps of Ilkley.

In English Year 2 have been reading the book ‘Dear Greenpeace’ to start our book we each followed instructions to make a Whale. We have acted out scenes from the book, thought about characters and thought of questions to ask.

In maths through the topic place value the children have been making numbers in different ways using the class concrete resources from their maths baskets. They have also been partitioning numbers into tens and ones, ordering numbers from smallest to greatest and vice and versa and counting in 2,s,5s, 10s and 3’s.

As part of Year 2’s transition work on Pirates the children learnt a pirate poem called I Wish I Was a Pirate by Tony Bradman. The children worked extremely hard to think of actions for the poem and then thought of ways they could improve their speaking and listening skills to help them maintain the interest of the audience. They then put on a Pirate Performance for their grown-ups so that they could show off their new performing skills.

Year 2 have had a great start back to school! They have been reading lots of different poems, identifying the features of a poem and performing poetry. They have even designed, made and evaluated their own pirate peg dolls.
